| Background Story |
Although I have never played professionally, I have been playing the piano since age 6. I am pretty much self taught (with a little nudge here and there from my mom, a classical singer and voice teacher), never having taken formal lessons. I spent most of my life just playing contemporary pop piano songs (Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell). I often tried my hand at writing, but never seemed to be able to come up with anything creative. Having been an English Lit major in college, I had a lot of poetry writing experience, and would usually write a "poetic" song and then try to fit some chords and a melody to it. It never worked...the lyrics were plodding and the music boring. A few years back I reversed the process...I began just messing around on the piano and started coming up with musical ideas, often by hitting a mistaken chord or note which sounded pretty good. I would add a vocal line with just some random lyrics, and would then build on that. I am much happier with the songs that have come out of that method...I think the music is more melodic and the lyrics are more thoughtful, reflective, and introspective. I also believe I never gave enough credit to my piano playing skills, and so have emphasized that a little more as I become more confident in them. I think the one aspect of my music I have never really had to "work" on is my voice, which was a gift from my mother (although mine is much lower and deeper than hers). :) |
